Ocean Innovation Consortium

In the speech by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the grand openingceremony for special events in commemoration of the 20th Marine Day,on July 20th, 2015, the launch of “Project to Cultivate Marine Pioneers of the Future” was announced. Here, a consortium made by government, industry, and academia will undertake various human capacity building activities leading to a fivefold increase in the number of engineers engaged in marine resource development in Japan to 10,000 engineers by 2030.

The Nippon Foundation Ocean Innovation Consortium

On the 4th of October 2016, the "Ocean Innovation Consortium" officially started its activities providing various educational opportunities for not only engineering students but also young engineering professionals interested in the field.

The Ocean Innovation Consortium offers support programs

The Ocean Innovation Consortium offers support programs, information, and resources that help engineering students and young engineering professionals to pursue these academic and vocational goals in the field.

For example, the Ocean Innovation Consortium offers the following support programs:

Delivering the attractiveness of the industry using various communication tools.

Developing curricula and teaching materials covering introduction to the industry, engineering technology and business practice.

Introducing practical aspects of the offshore engineering by providing engineering students with such experiential learning opportunities as supervised engineering projects and specialist lectures using research vessels and testing facilities owned by the national research institutes.

Providing Japanese engineering students with various supports for applying for internship programs overseas.
Designing and setting up bespoke overseas summer school course(s) specifically to suit the needs of the industry.

Offering a wide range of educational programs taught by specialist lecturers from overseas to the consortium corporate members.

In furtherance of its educational and professional development mission, the Ocean Innovation Consortium continually works to develop and revise its programs in order to provide the most effective support to students and young engineering professionals interested in marine development.
